Glossary of Terms

This is a basic glossary of common terms used by TeachBeyond. Some of these terms mean different things depending on your region. 

Individual's titles

  • Inquirer: A person who expresses initial interest in learning more about TeachBeyond and potential future service is an inquirer. The TeachBeyond Mobilization Team will seek to follow up on all inquiries in a timely manner. No formal relationship exists at this point between TeachBeyond and the Inquirer.
  • Applicant: If serious interest is expressed, the inquirer will be asked to begin the application process. This includes a written application, references (personal and professional), an interview, a personality inventory, a background check, a medical exam, and a church recommendation. Once this process is completed, the applicant will be presented to the Candidate Processing Committee (CPC) for evaluation and approval.
  • Candidate: If approved by the CPC, the applicant becomes a candidate and begins formal identification with TeachBeyond. The Candidate will receive a Welcome Packet (acceptance letter, budget summary/goals), permission to raise support, and a teachbeyond.org email address. All candidates will be required to participate in the TeachBeyond Orientation unless excused for unusual circumstances. Orientation ends with an induction ceremony during which he/she will be formally accepted as an Appointee. If, for reasons deemed significant by the TeachBeyond Orientation team, there is a question as to the suitability of a candidate for service, he/she may be asked not to participate in the induction service.
  • Appointee: An appointee typically has been oriented, accepted for a specific assignment, and is raising support in preparation for that assignment.
  • Member:
  1. A member refers to any person serving with TeachBeyond.
  2. A member generally serves as either an internationally-based member or a national office member.
  3. An internationally-based member generally serves as a support-based member. An appointee raising support becomes a member when he/she begins an assignment and/or receiving benefits. Health insurance benefits generally begin when their flight to their international assignment departs. Members may receive a salary beginning one month prior to departure to their international assignment with HR approval.
  4. A national office member is a member serving in his/her home country and supporting ongoing national and/or international ministry. His/her compensation may be support-based, be drawn from the operational budget, or some combination of the two. Cross-cultural living experience is highly recommended for these positions. Those without such experience are encouraged to participate in at least short-term mission projects such as English camps. These members, even when compensated by the operational budget, are encouraged to generate a donor/partner base, however modest.
  • Associate Member: This classification is reserved for those who do short-term, or occasional, service with TeachBeyond. Associate members may raise support toward service expenses only and are not eligible for salary or benefits. Student teachers, interns, and those returning from their assignment but open to future service or representation with TeachBeyond fit into this category.
  • Retired Member: These are members who no longer have an active assignment. Retired members may maintain personal support accounts, receive TeachBeyond communications, and will continue to be included as members. They may engage in approved ministry projects, and may receive stipends and continued donor support.
  • Seconded Member (Cf. Policy Secondment): This is a member identified with, and whose support comes from, another (like-minded) organization, but who is seconded to TeachBeyond for a specific role, or one who is seconded to another organization from TeachBeyond. Care and arrangements for the seconded member are clarified between TeachBeyond and the partner organization usually through a memorandum of understanding (MOU). These working agreements are reviewed according to terms in the MOU.
  • Affiliate: An affiliate member is an individual who is serving in a full-time position with TeachBeyond, but is not receiving a full salary from TeachBeyond. Affiliate membership does not constitute a significant difference for that member in terms of his/her relationship with TeachBeyond other than in the areas of finances and insurance requirements.
Common profiles of affiliate members:
  • Individuals who are serving at a TeachBeyond partner school that provides a salary/stipend that covers all or most of their living expenses.
  • Individuals whose spouses are employed in an occupation unrelated to TeachBeyond or are full-time students.
  • Individuals who are self-supported through use of personal funds verified by TeachBeyond. This most often includes retirees who are drawing on retirement/pension funds that cover their expenses.
  • Individuals whose donations, payroll, and insurance are being handled by an entity in a country where TeachBeyond is not registered.
  • Alumnus: An alumnus is someone who formerly served as a TeachBeyond member. Alumni can be found around the world and provide a rich resource for recruitment and informal public relations.

  • Home Assignment: A Home Assignment (HA) is a leave from the member's current assignment to reconnect with family, friends, and supporting individuals and organizations, to report personally about his/her service and TeachBeyond's broader vision, to receive training or service not available at the place of service, and/or to comply with legal residence requirements. HA's will typically be taken every 2 to 3 years. See policy number for more details and specific procedures.
